Message I have a freeplay in the driveline which occurs going on and off throttle and it drives me nuts. It appears not be a cummulative addition of more than one source. I think there are at least a three joint or connections involved.

Therefore, I am systematically disassembling the entire driveline in order to find, and correct, the source(s) of this off throttle backlash. I earlier checked out the obvious suspects: differential bushings and they are OK. So is the propeller [drive] shaft and Trans [isolator] mount. The are both new OEM 5k miles ago and still solid. Therefore, I am looking at everything else; starting at the flywheel, and working my way back. All universals, CV joints, ball cages, ring/pinion setups, and wheel bearings.

This project is probably overkill, but this it's the first time in five years I've had a fully setup garage to work in. So I am having a little fun along the way. I will probably get a new 97+ spec trans; down the clutch upgrade, install GD downpipes, and maybe pop in an ECU chip for desert.

One source of freeplay has been discovered to be the 5-ball cage joint on the drive axle shaft. Are these rebuildable with a Nissan kit?

The next most likely source of freeplay seems to be in the differential and trans. The differential has a solid click. I am taking it to a driveline specialist for inspection and probably to reset ring and pinion, and whatever else, to factory specs.

Finally there is some rotational movement between drive and coast modes in the transmission itself. The movement is probably 5-7 degrees, way more than what I think should be acceptable tolerances. Thats why I am looking to swap boxes. I have the first-to-second grind, and it would be nice to lose that as well.

So I will finally end up at Stg III w/ pipes all the way downwind.

Retirement is fun when everyday is Saturday. Gordo

What's the difference between Daytona and New York??
